Calverton School Students Visit State Capitol and Testify

Delegate Sue Kullen congratulates Calverton student Mathew Konerth on his outstanding testimony.

ANNAPOLIS - February 6, 2007: Students from the Calverton School in Huntingtown, Maryland visited the State Capitol on the suggestion of Delegate Sue Kullen.

Earlier in the school year Delegate Kullen visited the Calverton School and discussed the process which bills are passed with students of Mr. Wiener's 8th grade class. She encouraged the students to review upcoming legislation and choose one bill that interested the students and to visit the capitol to testify on the bill.

On Tuesday, February 6, Mr. Weiner's class visited Annapolis, toured the capitol building and watched the action of the House Chamber in the morning.

Later that day the Distracted Driving Bill (House Bill 174) was being heard in the Environmental Matters Committee and while many students were prepared to testify on the bill, one student's testimony stood out. Mathew Konerth researched the issue and provided thorough and confident testimony in support of HB174.

It's very refreshing to recognize that our future drivers are concerned about driver and driving safety.
