Delegate
Sue Kullen joins Calvert Elementary School students to discuss
representative democracy. |
As part of the
"Legislators-Back-to-School" week celebrated during the fall
of each school year, Delegate Sue Kullen visits
schools throughout her district. By the winter holidays, she will have taught every 5th, 8th and High School level
AP Government classes about representative democracy.
Delegate Kullen will have joined students of the following schools:
Northern, Huntingtown, Calvert High Schools; Calvert, Northern,
Plum Point and Windy Hill Middle Schools; Beach, Windy Hill,
Huntingtown, Sunderland, Mt. Harmony, Plum Point and St. Leonard
Elementary Schools. Additionally, Delegate Kullen made presentations
to the Girl Scouts at Mutual Elementary School and students of the
Calverton School.
The program,
sponsored by National Conference of State Legislator's (NCSL),
encourages legislators to visit their local classrooms to help students
understand that their ideas count.
Each year
more than 1,400 state lawmakers visit an estimated 320,000
students. Back to School week is designed to help students understand
the legislative process of debate, negotiation and compromise and to
help legislators gauge how students feel about issues. Legislators and
students interact in informal discussions, participate in mock
legislative sessions or simulated public hearings, and even draft bills
together.
